U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) announced a new interview in the Veterans History Project Series, aimed at highlighting the accomplishments and military careers of veterans from Florida’s 17th District. This latest installment features United States Navy veteran Edward Sutton.

“United States Navy veteran Edward Sutton embodies true patriotism, and I am deeply thankful for his service to this great nation during World War II. His bravery and dedication are a testament to his unwavering love for our great nation. It is essential that his story is preserved and remembered, as it serves as a powerful inspiration for future generations,” said Congressman Steube.

Edward Sutton, who served as a Petty Officer Third Class during World War II from April 1, 1945, to July 8, 1946, shared his experiences in the interview. “It taught me how to obey orders, be sympathetic and not get all upset,” Sutton stated. He also conveyed an important message for future generations: “They should have some patriotic beliefs and be aware of the Greatest Generation and what good they did for the country, and how many of them lost their lives.”

The full interview can be viewed on Congressman Steube’s YouTube channel. The Office of Congressman Greg Steube will submit the interview to the Veterans History Project (VHP), an initiative by the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center dedicated to collecting and preserving oral histories of U.S. veterans.

Launched in 2000, the VHP aims to collect, preserve, and make accessible personal accounts from United States military veterans and Gold Star Families so that future generations can hear directly from veterans and gain a deeper understanding of their service. Researchers, scholars, and educators use VHP collections as primary sources; these include oral histories, photographs, manuscripts, and other original materials that supplement historical texts.

Veterans from all branches and ranks of the United States military who served in conflicts ranging from World War I to more recent engagements are eligible to participate in the project. More information on VHP can be found at https://www.loc.gov/vets/. Residents of Florida’s 17th Congressional District interested in participating can visit https://steube.house.gov/services/vhp.
