U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) announced a new interview in the Veterans History Project Series, which honors the careers and sacrifices of veterans from Florida’s 17th District. The latest interview features Master Chief Petty Officer Bob Gerle, United States Navy, Retired, who served during both the Cold War and Vietnam Era.

“Master Chief Petty Officer Bob Gerle embodies the steadfast dedication and resilience that are the hallmarks of our nation’s armed forces. His long and distinguished service during critical periods in American history is a powerful testament to his unwavering commitment to our country. Sharing his story not only honors his contributions but also serves as an enduring inspiration to future generations,” said Congressman Steube.

In his interview, Gerle reflected on the values that sustained him throughout his service and that he hopes to impart to future generations: “Don’t Quit,” “Be true to yourself, but also to those closest to you,” and “Tell it like it is, and do your best.” These principles, forged through years of service and sacrifice, continue to resonate as a powerful message of integrity and perseverance.

The Office of Congressman Greg Steube will submit the interview to the Veterans History Project (VHP), an initiative of the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center. The VHP aims to collect and retain the oral histories of U.S. veterans.

Initially started in 2000, the VHP collects, preserves, and makes accessible personal accounts of U.S. military veterans and Gold Star Families so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand their service. Researchers, scholars, and educators rely upon VHP collections as a primary source. The oral histories supplement historical texts and valued cultural resources. Veterans from all branches who served in World War I through more recent conflicts are eligible to participate.

For more information on the VHP, please visit https://www.loc.gov/vets/. If you live in Florida’s 17th Congressional district, please visit https://steube.house.gov/services/vhp to participate.
