U.S. Representative Greg Steube recently extended his congratulations to nine students from Florida’s 17th Congressional District who have secured appointments to U.S. Service Academies. These appointments follow a nomination process that took place in December.
“These exceptional young men and women have chosen a path of duty, discipline, and devotion to the United States of America,” said Rep. Steube. “It’s an honor to nominate students from Florida’s 17th District who are answering the call to serve. At a time when our nation needs strong, principled leaders, these appointees represent the very best of our communities. I thank them for their commitment to defending our freedoms and upholding the values that make our country great.”
Rep. Steube joined several appointees and their families at a luncheon hosted by his office last week.
The students appointed include Sydney Brann from Sarasota High School and Keller Button from Sarasota Military Academy, both headed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis; Quinn Briggs from Lemon Bay High School and Zoe Kirby from Cardinal Mooney High School, both attending the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; Patrick Hooper from Lemon Bay High School, Ava Micholopoulos and Christine Wu from Pine View School, Sydney Pablo from Venice High School, and Jaden White from Dunbar High School—all appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
These appointees will attend three of the nation’s five prestigious service academies: the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, MD; and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO. The other two federal service academies are the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy; however, no students from FL-17 received appointments there this year.
The Coast Guard Academy is unique among these institutions as it does not require a congressional nomination for admission.
