U.S. Representative Greg Steube and Senator Rick Scott, both Republicans from Florida, visited Sarasota County to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Milton. The visit included a tour of affected areas guided by local officials including Police Chief Rex Troche, Officer Michael Skinner, Officer Ron Dixon from the Sarasota Police Department Marine Unit, and Mayor Liz Alpert.

Following the tour, Rep. Steube expressed his concern for residents who are dealing with repeated storm impacts. "It’s heartbreaking to see people who started to recover – we just went through St. Armands after Hurricane Helene came through with a 5-7 foot storm surge," he said.

Rep. Steube emphasized the importance of federal assistance in recovery efforts, stating, “Like Senator Scott said, we’re doing whatever we can to ensure FEMA and the federal government is playing their role in all of this.”

A key focus of Rep. Steube's remarks was on urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to schedule a vote on the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act. He explained that the bill has already passed in the House and would provide tax relief for victims of federally declared disasters such as Hurricanes Ian, Milton, Helene, Idalia, Debby, the Maui Fires, and the East Palestine Train Derailment.

“Senator Scott and I have a bill together," Rep. Steube noted. "We call on Chuck Schumer to bring the Federal Disaster Tax Relief bill to the floor."

Rep. Steube also led a group of 57 bipartisan House colleagues in urging Schumer to act swiftly on this legislation which aims to offer significant financial relief for disaster victims across America.

In addition to legislative efforts, Congressman Steube joined other members of Florida's delegation in calling on the White House to approve Florida's request for a Major Disaster Declaration following Hurricane Milton.

For those seeking information about hurricane recovery resources in Florida's 17th District, Rep. Steube has provided updates on his website where details about FEMA and SBA applications will be available soon.
