U.S. Representative Greg Steube from Florida has been appointed to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence for the 119th Congress. The committee is responsible for overseeing national intelligence agencies and investigating potential abuses that could threaten civil liberties and national security.
Rep. Steube expressed concern over how intelligence operations have shifted since the September 11 attacks, stating, "In the twenty-plus years following the September 11th terrorist attacks, the rules by which our intelligence community operates have dangerously veered away from collecting intelligence on our adversaries." He highlighted issues of unconstitutional surveillance on American citizens and manipulation of information to protect political figures.
He emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in intelligence activities: “It’s time to restore accountability and transparency, and ensure these agencies work for the people—not against them." Rep. Steube also mentioned his commitment to supporting President Trump's ideals regarding constitutional rights.
The committee's agenda includes addressing surveillance abuses, safeguarding privacy, and ensuring adherence to constitutional limits within the intelligence community. In addition to this new role, Rep. Steube will continue serving on The House Committee on Ways and Means.
Rep. Steube has a background in military service, having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. His experience includes working with intelligence community members to secure information crucial for military safety.
