Charlotte County issued the following announcement on Sept. 7.
Charlotte County Community Services received the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials 2021 Operational Facility Award for the Centennial Park complex. This award recognizes a support facility of unique or significant design.
Centennial Park recreation center and Community Services administrative offices opened in Dec. 2019, and the adjacent aquatic facility opened in Oct. 2020. The recreation center includes a gymnasium, two multi-purpose rooms, fitness center, Master Gardner office, community garden, playground and multiple open spaces slated for future amenities. The aquatic facility includes a 50-meter by 25-yard pool with one and three-meter diving boards, digital video/scoreboard and locker rooms. The complex is adjacent to four soccer fields, five baseball fields, one softball field, a disc golf course, a Veterans memorial, fishing ponds, and paved walking/biking trails.
Recreation and park facilities have always served as a community gathering place and our goal is to ensure that people in our community have access to great parks, recreation centers and aquatic facilities to enjoy,” said Tommy Scott, Community Services director.“I’m extremely proud and appreciative of our team’s collaboration and teamwork with our Facilities Construction & Maintenance department to design a facility that provides Charlotte County with a multitude of recreational opportunities and programs.”
Centennial Park recreation center and aquatic facility were funded by the 2014 1% local option sales tax approved by the Board of County Commissioners and voted on and supported by Charlotte County residents. Centennial Park is located at 1120 Centennial Blvd. in Port Charlotte.
