WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has proposed three amendments to H.R. 4665, The Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act of 2024, in an effort to ensure that American taxpayer dollars do not end up in the hands of terror groups or the corrupt organization UNESCO.
"UNESCO is a mismanaged organization and has a long history of anti-United States bias, anti-Israel bias, and has honored countries that consistently violate human rights. Why should we give Americans' taxpayer dollars to organizations that hate America?" said Rep. Steube.
Rep. Steube's amendments aim to prevent the allocation of funds to UNESCO, the Lebanese Armed Forces, and Iraq, due to concerns about potential exploitation by terror groups such as Hezbollah, Iran, and ISIS.
The first amendment ensures that none of the funds provided by the Act will be used to assist UNESCO. The second amendment prohibits the availability of funds for the Lebanese Armed Forces, and the third amendment restricts the use of funds to provide assistance to Iraq.
In addition to these amendments, H.R. 4665 includes Rep. Steube's bipartisan legislation, The COI Elimination Act, which seeks to limit U.S. funding to the United Nations International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.
"The ongoing anti-Israel commission formed by the UN's discredited Human Rights Council directly obstructs peace in the Middle East and intentionally targets the only democracy in the region. Our U.S. tax dollars have no place funding an anti-Israel commission," said Rep. Steube.
