U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has put forth an amendment to the FY24 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, known as H.R. 4664, in an effort to defund the Biden Administration's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) activities at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Rep. Steube's amendment specifically targets the Communications Equity and Diversity Council at the FCC, stating that none of the funds made available by the Act should be used for this purpose.
Citing concerns about the infiltration of left-wing, progressive ideology into various areas of the federal government, Rep. Steube argues that taxpayer dollars are being wasted on what he sees as racist and discriminatory activities under the guise of DEI. In his own words, Rep. Steube states, "The Biden Administration is wasting our taxpayer dollars by infiltrating left-wing, progressive ideology into almost every area of the federal government... Americans are sick and tired of funding racist, discriminatory activities in the name of 'DEI.'"
Rep. Steube's main criticism lies with the DEI office's mission to "advance equity in the provision of and access to digital communication services." He believes that this office prioritizes progressive agendas by promoting the media presence of small businesses based solely on race or gender, rather than serving the American people as a whole. In his view, the office is working for selected groups instead of the greater good of the nation.
The introduction of this amendment reflects a growing debate surrounding DEI initiatives within the federal government. While proponents argue that such measures are essential to addressing historical inequalities and promoting inclusivity, critics like Rep. Steube contend that these efforts can lead to discrimination and unfair treatment based on race or gender.
It is important to note that Rep. Steube's amendment is just one of many proposed changes to H.R. 4664. The full list of amendments can be found here.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this particular amendment will fare in Congress and whether it will ultimately impact the funding of DEI activities at the FCC.
