WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) has introduced legislation aimed at defunding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and redirecting any remaining funds to the construction of a border wall along America's southern border.

In a statement regarding the legislation, Rep. Steube expressed his concerns about UNRWA's alleged ties to Hamas, stating, "UNRWA blatantly supports Hamas. Americans are outraged that our tax dollars fund this antisemitic group." He further accused UNRWA of involvement in facilitating terrorist activities, including providing weapons to Hamas and indoctrinating students with anti-Israel propaganda. Rep. Steube criticized the decision to resume funding to UNRWA under the Biden administration, emphasizing the need to prioritize national security by investing in border wall construction.

Joining Rep. Steube in this initiative are several cosponsors, including Representatives Andy Ogles (R-Tenn), Randy Weber (R-Texas), Troy Nehls (R-Texas), Bill Posey (R-Fla.), and Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.). Additionally, Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) introduced a companion legislation in the U.S. Senate, echoing concerns about UNRWA's alleged support for Hamas and its role in promoting anti-Israel sentiments.

Senator Kennedy emphasized the need to stop funding a group that aids attacks against Israel, stating, "The U.S. can’t keep bankrolling a corrupt group that helps Hamas attack our greatest ally in the Middle East." The lawmakers' efforts come in response to reports linking UNRWA employees to violent incidents and terrorist activities, raising questions about the organization's accountability and mission.

UNRWA, one of the largest United Nations programs, has faced scrutiny for its alleged connections to Hamas and its promotion of violence and extremism within educational curriculum. Reports have indicated that UNRWA workers have been involved in attacks against civilians, procured weapons for militants, and used UNRWA facilities to launch assaults on Israel. Despite its mandate to provide humanitarian assistance, UNRWA has been accused of fostering a culture of violence and terrorism, with ties to Hamas militants.

The proposed legislation reflects a broader effort to address concerns about UNRWA's activities and prioritize national security measures, including border wall construction. As discussions continue around the future of U.S. funding for international organizations like UNRWA, the debate over balancing humanitarian assistance with security interests remains ongoing.
